At one point, seventy tons of bronze that were intended for one of his statues had to be melted down and cast as weapons to protect Milan from the invading French. Eventually, the French did take control of Milan and Leonardo left in search of a new patron. Instead of finding a patron, Leonardo moved throughout Italy and France for the remaining 17 years of his life, taking commissions for a variety of work. At the time of his death in 1519, Leonardo was in the employ of the King of France.
