Leonardo da Vinci is perhaps one of the most recognized names in history. Who was this man? Born in 1452 in the village of Anhiano (near Vinci), Leonardo was the son of a wealthy notary from Florence and a peasant woman. At age 14, he went to the studio of Verrocchio where he studied painting and sculpture. By the time he was 26, Leonardo was an independent master painter. He lived and worked primarily in Florence until he was thirty years old. Leonardo moved to Milan in 1482 where he was employed by the Duke. Leonardo worked on a variety of projects of his own choosing during that time.
